Inspired by Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891) — a line so lovely that most people never notice who thinks it. Lord Henry Wotton is turning over the story of Dorian's ruined parentage, a mother dead, a boy left to a loveless old man, and finds it beautiful rather than sad: "Behind every exquisite thing that existed, there was something tragic." It is the novel's charming villain, admiring the damage that made a beautiful thing beautiful.

The design features a single candle burning low in an ornate holder, a great moth with gold-dusted wings drawn to the flame, dark botanicals and small stars gathering around it, with the quote lettered in antique gold above and below.

Wilde's only novel was read aloud against him in court five years after publication, the beauty in it treated as evidence. The line has long outlived the man who thinks it, and readers keep it for a truer reason than Lord Henry ever meant: that lovely things usually cost someone something, and the moth goes to the flame anyway.
