Inspired by Sappho of Lesbos, writing around 600 BC — and by the one promise of hers that came true. Somewhere in a poem now lost, she said that someone, in some time still to come, would remember her. It is a small, unguarded line: not a boast, just a woman saying out loud that she hoped to outlast herself.
The design features two women in flowing Greek drapery standing close together on a marble step, a scattering of golden stars rising into the open air above them, the edges soft as torn papyrus.
The ancient world thought Sappho the greatest of the lyric poets; Plato is said to have called her the tenth Muse. Nine books of her work existed once. Almost all of it is gone — what we have survives in scraps of papyrus and in quotations copied out by other writers centuries later. This particular line reached us because a Greek orator, writing some seven hundred years after her death, thought it too beautiful not to repeat. She was right, and the proof is that you can read her at all.
