Inspired by Wilkie Collins's The Woman in White (1860) — the most famous entrance in Victorian fiction. Walter Hartright is walking a lonely moonlit road at midnight when a hand touches his shoulder from behind: "There, in the middle of the broad bright high-road — there, as if it had that moment sprung out of the earth or dropped from the heaven — stood the figure of a solitary Woman, dressed from head to foot in white." She asks him a question, points toward the dark cloud over London, and vanishes into the story.
The design features a woman in a long white dress walking away down a moonlit road between bare trees, her back to us, the full moon low and enormous behind her, with the quote lettered above and below.
Collins wrote the scene from a real night walk and a woman who really did appear, and readers queued for the next instalment for nine months — it is the book that made the mystery novel a thing people wait for. She is not a ghost, though everyone assumes she is. She is a woman who escaped, and knows something, and is trying to warn a stranger before she is taken back.
