Inspired by Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1820) — not the horseman, but the valley itself: "the place still continues under the sway of some witching power, that holds a spell over the minds of the good people, causing them to walk in a continual reverie." The design features a moonlit hollow — a pale road winding down between dark wooded hills, a crescent moon hanging low with bats adrift beneath it — all framed in gnarled, thorny branches, with the quote lettered in ornate antique gold above and below.
Irving gave America its first great ghost story, and before a single hoofbeat is heard he spends his opening pages on this: a place where the air itself makes people see visions and hear music in the dark. Two centuries later, the reverie still takes anyone who reads past October's first page.
